Hilariously Sweet Valentine Jokes for Speech!

Thursday, February 4, 2021

Happy, happy February! In February I always love a good Valentine theme in speech. Lots of holiday vocabulary, kindness, and lots of love. Although most of my students have come back to see me in the clinic, I am still doing a few teletherapy sessions a week. As I have mentioned before, one of my teletherapy students told me a joke at the beginning of our session a few months ago. I loved how it just lightened the mood and started our session out on a happy note. So now, I start all my sessions out with a joke!

Ohhh love is in the air! It's another week filled with Valentine's Day activities. Check out what we have been up to!
I cannot let a holiday or theme be celebrated in speech without a book to go with it.
All of the kids just love Curious George, and this book was no exception. The book contains fun flaps that are great for predicting!
After we read the story, we made Valentine's Day bracelets! I picked up the beads and pipe cleaners in the dollar section at Joann's. I love to stock up on these crafty items because you can use them year round to target so many goals. The kids created their own bracelets (or decided to make them for someone special!) as we targeted their individual goals. For my articulation kids, they got to put on one bead for every 3 targets practiced. For my language kids, they could put a bead on for every item they named in a category, every correct pronoun they used, every question they answered, etc. Really- any goal can be addressed with these! This is always an activity that gets requested again and again. Even the boys like it- most of my boys wanted to make bracelets for their moms or sisters (I know, so sweet, right?!) We got so much skill and drill practice in without them even knowing it! Keep this activity in mind for a data day.
To keep with the monkey theme, we used my Monkey Love Valentine's Day Articulation Unit! This packet is filled with articulation cards, a board game, and homework sheets… that all have an adorable sock monkey theme!
Want this packet to add to your Valentine's Day bag of tricks? You can download it from my Teachers Pay Teachers Store here or enter the giveaway below!I hope you have a very happy Valentine's week and so much fun celebrating while you make a difference in these kids' lives!

The Day It Rained Hearts… In Speech!

There is something about Valentine's Day that just makes me smile. Maybe it's the colors or maybe it's because it's a holiday abut love. But either way, it's definitely a holiday that doesn't get ignored in or out of the speech room! For the last 2 weeks we have been using the book, Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond
This is an adorable story about a little girl that catches hearts in a rain storm and turns them into special valentines cards for her friends. Bonus- This book is loaded with /r/ words! It was incredible practice for one of my older students to read this out loud. The kids love this book. It's a great way to kick off the holiday celebration. I don't know about you, but I like to celebrate Valentine's Day for a few weeks.
What's a holiday themed book without a holiday themed craft or two?!
I found these adorable foam hearts and stickers at Target's Dollar Spot. So after we read the story, I gave each student their own heart (that I caught for them in the rain storm!) to decorate for a special friend or family member. This activity allowed me to target speech and language goals as well as allow the kids to get creative. My articulation kids had to practice 3 targets for each sticker they placed on their heart. My younger kids practiced requesting, prepositions, and colors while decorating their hearts. This is also a great way to tie in following directions.
Like I said earlier, one week is just not enough with this adorable book. So we spread it out through two weeks. I also created an umbrella craftivity to go along with this story! Click on the picture below to download this freebie.

Holy moly! How did another week already fly by?! I hope you all had an amazing Valentine's Week and felt lots of love in and out of the speech room. Before we get down to speechie business, I wanted to share this photo with y'all.
Kenzie and I went to go surprise daddy at work last night. We brought him cookies and beer (what's a better V-Day gift for a man?) Of course it had a Pinterest-inspired note on it that said, "We love you BEERy much!" He loved it.
Ok, on to speechie business. This week we read two Valentine's themed books in speech... time was running out and I had too many adorable stories to share! First we read, Biscuit's Valentine's Day and had some fun with a freebie book companion from Lauren LaCour. Visit Busy Bee Speech here to snag a copy!
The second story we read this week was, Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse!
In addition to reading this adorable story, we also created "Things I Love" books! This is a freebie from the Frog Spot blog (she has the best clipart!) You can download a copy of this book here!
Of course our week wouldn't be complete with our a craftivity! My articulation kiddos made Articulation Love Bugs! This was inspired from Word Nerd Speech Teach's guest post for me last year!
Last but not least, we worked on patterns. Remember those heart erasers I told you about last week? Well they got put to good use again this week! The kids and I had fun making up patterns for each other to complete. This pattern template came from The 3 Dinosaurs blog.
Yes, there was a whole lotta love going on this week! How was your week?

Thursday Rewind {With a Giveaway!}

Happy Thursday!! So I normally try to post on Fridays about the activities we did in speech that week, but this week I cut my week a little short. As you read this, I am on the way to Savannah, GA to celebrate my good friend Francesca's bachelorette party! (If you care to follow our trip, follow me on Instagram @kevstin) This week we continued to spread the love and celebrate Valentine's Day. We even invited that crazy old lady into our sessions this week, too! Take a peek into my sessions this week... make sure you get all the way to the bottom where there may be a giveaway!
This week we read the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose!
My students never seem to get tired of these books! In addition to reading this story, we had some fun with a few festive activities.
First, we used this activity from my speech & language set to practice story retelling and sequencing skills with the Old Lady!
Then, we went on a story scavenger hunt to find our target speech words in the story! After we finished, I sent these handy little worksheets home for homework (score!)
My younger kiddos and I created a Valentine's Day speech wreath.... although almost every single kid put it on their head as a hat when we finished. V-Day visor? Sure!
This craft was inspired by the wonderful Jenna Rayburn!
Last but  certainly not least, we wrapped up our week with the Valentine Heart Challenge! Each child placed a heart on the mat when they practiced a target. This made for a fun skill and drill session! Instead of candy I found these adorable heart erasers at the Target Dollar Spot that worked like a charm. You can download this challenge (and a bunch more!) from the Peachie Speechie! You can download this freebie here!
Whew, what a sweet week! If you would like to enter to win a copy of my There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose activity pack, enter below!

Welcome Home Wednesday: Lindsey Swanson-Karol

Wednesday, January 23, 2013
Hello! I am excited to welcome home and introduce to you a new blogger, Lindsey! She has some great Valentine's Day activities to share!

Hello Simply Speech readers! I'm so excited to be a guest blogger today! About a month ago, I started a blog called Word Nerd Speech Teach and began making materials to share. In my blog posts, I try to incorporate a free, limited prep time activity that can be used for a variety of different goal areas. I hope that you can use the activities that I blog about or are inspired to make a variation that suits your needs!!

This Valentine's Day post is inspired by Pinterest and altered for speech and language goals and therapy!! These are some of the activities that my students will be doing to celebrate Valentine's Day!!

Valentine's Day Round-Up Activity #1: Articulation Heart Caterpillars

This activity is super easy and so much fun! Start by cutting out paper pink, red, and purple hearts. Next, print and cut out pictures of each student's target sounds and glue the pictures to the hearts. Add a head, antennae, legs, and googly eyes and you've got yourself one awesome Valentine's Day bug! (Challenge your students to make their bug really long for lots of practice!)

Valentine's Day Round-Up Activity #2: A Reinforcer Sealed with a Kiss (or a Hug)

I love any excuse to incorporate candy into my sessions and this is such an easy activity to prepare! First, start by writing numbers (I'd suggest 2-6) onto the bottom of chocolate kisses and/or hugs. (This indicates how many words a student working on articulation or phonology sounds must say, or the amount of language questions a student must answer.)

Next, put the candies upright and allow students to take turns drawing a hug or a kiss. If the student tries his/her best at their turn, they get to keep the chocolate treat!

Valentine's Day Round-Up Activity #3: Valentine's Day Grammar

This next activity can be used to target pronouns, "is" vs. "are", the "ing" ending, and syntax (to name just a few), but I'm sure you can come up with even more variations for your students' needs. Start with large paper hearts that have a large hole in the center so that students can put the heart around the item/answer they choose. If you are working on any of the goal areas that I mentioned above, this is how I would suggest targeting these areas. First, I grabbed boy and girl dolls so that my students can work on "she", "he", and "they". Students put the heart around the boy and use the word "he", the girl and use the word "she", or both dolls to target "they".

Two note cards with "is" or "are" encourage a student to choose an auxiliary verb to correctly match with the subject of their sentence.

Next, set out a few different action word cards to choose from. I love these Preschool Vocabulary Action Cards by Linguisystems, because in my opinion, the product is very versatile. Once the student selects the action that they would like, they put a post-it with "ing" at the end of the card and put another heart around that card.

To target basic syntax, have the student "read" the sentence to practice correct structure.

Valentine's Day Round-Up Activity #4: FREEBIE - Conversation Heart Reinforcer

Here is a FREEBIE that can be used for any age group and any targeted goal! This activity was inspired by Busy Bee Speech's marshmallow freebie, which you can find here. First, print and laminate a conversation heart mat for each student in your group. Students can keep any conversation heart candies that they earn throughout the session on this mat.

Next, make a few copies of the conversation heart page.

Finally, go to town targeting speech and language goals and allowing students to pick cards and enjoy their Valentine's Day treats!

You can access this activity at my TpT store here!!!! You can also follow my blog for even more ideas and tips. If you download this activity, please consider "liking" my Facebook page in order to stay up-to-date with new products and freebies!

I hope that you find these activities useful and that they save you a little bit of time as far as planning and preparing are concerned! Thanks for reading!

Can You Feel the LOVE?

5 days until Valentine's Day!! I love Valetine's Day so much we have already started celebrating this week in speech! This is a picture of our (in progress) door decorations. Each student wrote down target words they have been practicing onto hearts.

I also wanted to share some ideas I came across on Pinterest that would work well for speech and language groups.
