The weather cools down and the holidays are right around the corner. Since I work at a private school, we don't go all out for Halloween. However, this is the time of year that I love teaching about creepy crawly critters....especially spiders! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG2_vWaVFDcvJu0SgGk4dyMBhoif-iNM8e3uP3drp1Q1CRc1_715DHPZ0tp3_Flgok6R_-2pUaAMtwyr5qOiUtfRshx213JAtNbx9KfBrFJmAlHcWDNy-rZdiDqStSpwT_hKm9VnG5tmtYgB0KfZF3npNW46f-MB4VAOqCcqi940ySV2-rcVas7YfYWkc/s4032/IMG_3346%202.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG2_vWaVFDcvJu0SgGk4dyMBhoif-iNM8e3uP3drp1Q1CRc1_715DHPZ0tp3_Flgok6R_-2pUaAMtwyr5qOiUtfRshx213JAtNbx9KfBrFJmAlHcWDNy-rZdiDqStSpwT_hKm9VnG5tmtYgB0KfZF3npNW46f-MB4VAOqCcqi940ySV2-rcVas7YfYWkc/w640-h480/IMG_3346%202.HEIC" width="640" /></a></div>This was a really fun project to make with the class. It was fairly simple to make and used supplies that I already had in my classroom. To get started, I took a piece of card stock paper and a bottle of glue (don't use a glue stick) I drew out a spiderweb with the glue on the paper. A white crayon works too, but the glue method turns out so much better. It also gives the web a 3-d texture! I did this during the kids rest time and let it dry overnight to avoid little fingers touching the wet glue!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtAXBkIfcvOnpNgW498DYiTSAzQ0JLrX0A98Xp4zjW43ytNIF4noVW2XlD2STON4I7WTGCO4cQaJ-nVjztGChyphenhyphennDNWYFJHaBT5zG_UbeTkGchZHkN-uKOXz6x8BMOf_AX9K_DFBnZQLVhkFk9o9l-nuAjS9w3cOqW4Edc2ZqsTHEQskEHohOKubpUNNSE/s4032/IMG_3249%202.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtAXBkIfcvOnpNgW498DYiTSAzQ0JLrX0A98Xp4zjW43ytNIF4noVW2XlD2STON4I7WTGCO4cQaJ-nVjztGChyphenhyphennDNWYFJHaBT5zG_UbeTkGchZHkN-uKOXz6x8BMOf_AX9K_DFBnZQLVhkFk9o9l-nuAjS9w3cOqW4Edc2ZqsTHEQskEHohOKubpUNNSE/w300-h400/IMG_3249%202.HEIC" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">The next day, I had the kids paint their spiderwebs with watercolors! The glue will resist the watercolor so it creates a very cool design and leaves you with a beautiful spiderweb!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiELweWtPBhW5EbJ9Z7ZvY-irvRYAHvLXOVR4rOf1tDZLeDEui_8j8J_JtCtNjhypw5xo5hfahnffVEVIROKDyUpGN2TBPmwla1iQGq-TNPaMQDSR_RttRJesrpacaRmm2fcIYcNzKQlae6oyYEhcYkCAzu-oB3NtW6vRTzqtvI4WkdMUMKvVcv9yS4RN8/s4032/IMG_3250%202.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiELweWtPBhW5EbJ9Z7ZvY-irvRYAHvLXOVR4rOf1tDZLeDEui_8j8J_JtCtNjhypw5xo5hfahnffVEVIROKDyUpGN2TBPmwla1iQGq-TNPaMQDSR_RttRJesrpacaRmm2fcIYcNzKQlae6oyYEhcYkCAzu-oB3NtW6vRTzqtvI4WkdMUMKvVcv9yS4RN8/w300-h400/IMG_3250%202.heic" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Next, I cut out black circles and 8 spider legs for each student. I used a <a href="https://a.co/d/4lh4k9c">2 inch circle hole punch</a> to make the spider body. Before the kids added their spider to the web, we watched a fun <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qdxEiIB_Sw">video on spiders by SciShow Kids</a>. If you haven't checked this YouTube channel out yet, I recommend it! During the video we learned that spiders have 8 legs but can have lots of eyes! This way they knew how many legs to give their spiders, but I let them decide how many eyes to give their own spider. Googly eyes would work great, but I used <a href="https://a.co/d/0dwwzRF">sticker eyes</a> I bought on Amazon. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijzb54rIqe9KXbTJmTAY_lzwepjbairyUSv4y0YRNIn_ADGrm8iKcCGdqRmXl2hmZXhL6MZcc7NF3TbODNMllO80kbskyo0ctHVqnNzN8E6UDuBF6sWRA-MokIyVnbQ49JKcvYQ7ElnZ8voRUqnzce50ErssW2cQatYM3qYt8E4Z1EJS0rMWTQgzghXAI/s4032/IMG_3260%202.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijzb54rIqe9KXbTJmTAY_lzwepjbairyUSv4y0YRNIn_ADGrm8iKcCGdqRmXl2hmZXhL6MZcc7NF3TbODNMllO80kbskyo0ctHVqnNzN8E6UDuBF6sWRA-MokIyVnbQ49JKcvYQ7ElnZ8voRUqnzce50ErssW2cQatYM3qYt8E4Z1EJS0rMWTQgzghXAI/w300-h400/IMG_3260%202.heic" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These spiders turned out so cute and are perfect hallway art. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOu9J7IMgDuIcWAAeL47X9N8UaUgl5emZqNfxhccz-fyelINikJAa-6ciOuhaO5lw7BnZKh6zGdIOLYaxV4-QzwBwteR-pwAi86zHH2f5g6tSfPCi5lolJE91_jlJh2bCErL97xSUSvw8ruesXMoxmG5D7Ym4FX3URwygMESHoaS3MKEnEWwt5gdKFufY/s4032/IMG_3346%202.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOu9J7IMgDuIcWAAeL47X9N8UaUgl5emZqNfxhccz-fyelINikJAa-6ciOuhaO5lw7BnZKh6zGdIOLYaxV4-QzwBwteR-pwAi86zHH2f5g6tSfPCi5lolJE91_jlJh2bCErL97xSUSvw8ruesXMoxmG5D7Ym4FX3URwygMESHoaS3MKEnEWwt5gdKFufY/w400-h300/IMG_3346%202.HEIC" width="400" /></a></div></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0e5bvQQCaoLJFb82cBHOEWT7aYRxAtnjqCk14QeUBTlgxFXpaf-A01xPNBpgZYWkOpImfVMUATvbn-LKEtSZQIiycq2j3aNBqmWz78dZa6D3AjYQfUUjSzbGCVlVrwNwBUFnkzWuYjrDTA23-jpqaGmFZ1WO3QRhwEDpDAO-WhApwPh-P6oCm_2BYfCc/s4032/IMG_3347%202.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0e5bvQQCaoLJFb82cBHOEWT7aYRxAtnjqCk14QeUBTlgxFXpaf-A01xPNBpgZYWkOpImfVMUATvbn-LKEtSZQIiycq2j3aNBqmWz78dZa6D3AjYQfUUjSzbGCVlVrwNwBUFnkzWuYjrDTA23-jpqaGmFZ1WO3QRhwEDpDAO-WhApwPh-P6oCm_2BYfCc/w300-h400/IMG_3347%202.heic" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXBCTEDhh3yUZdFxvZBDiYlHCTlnsmt3qpFgygDKV4uR_DaA9iWZUW5h8hZpuXLpiHzWtaeLGNsArFGE0UqMdr8k7xCE3kmTgJLqFAgI0_wljMqIK6jmYf6o-JG0EZf5gNvg37Fb3zt3tRQ76C5NKZ_bkW7geaHAHBFlyfvZvXrDxu26Z5J8qeUoJVv_I/s4032/IMG_3348%202.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXBCTEDhh3yUZdFxvZBDiYlHCTlnsmt3qpFgygDKV4uR_DaA9iWZUW5h8hZpuXLpiHzWtaeLGNsArFGE0UqMdr8k7xCE3kmTgJLqFAgI0_wljMqIK6jmYf6o-JG0EZf5gNvg37Fb3zt3tRQ76C5NKZ_bkW7geaHAHBFlyfvZvXrDxu26Z5J8qeUoJVv_I/w300-h400/IMG_3348%202.heic" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p> Kristin Cummings, SLPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07431014684938585456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8402704037412434534.post-24486989028589291322023-07-05T14:46:00.000-04:002023-07-05T14:46:01.492-04:00Teaching Life Skills<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiodNu05jjLHxpGb5K1kEDikEKv-Af7OZfdg8_y6UXlRfxkC9pmd3cNgiyvnHC3Mu24nnM7aibL0UsDAUPIH2KUms4XppfzecGjlZUmbx5AUkfxjpPh-bz3CarNMACdPc4CNFyDhIUb84QnZILZAJJ9HN-aLyBfy_cjOmJPKJuFKWFavRxdavYFpoFwUOg/s5760/AdobeStock_179163058.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3840" data-original-width="5760" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiodNu05jjLHxpGb5K1kEDikEKv-Af7OZfdg8_y6UXlRfxkC9pmd3cNgiyvnHC3Mu24nnM7aibL0UsDAUPIH2KUms4XppfzecGjlZUmbx5AUkfxjpPh-bz3CarNMACdPc4CNFyDhIUb84QnZILZAJJ9HN-aLyBfy_cjOmJPKJuFKWFavRxdavYFpoFwUOg/w640-h426/AdobeStock_179163058.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I was having a conversation with a co-worker the other day and we got on the subject of life skills. Although, I shouldn't be surprised, it's been a whirlwind! This past year has been full of many new adventures, but the biggest one is that I joined a local private school and started teaching PreK. I have learned so much over the past year and I am excited to share our preschool adventures here with you here. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLrwUyzzsRKBJbr32IaU4uSatD--ffMx6HBWigHeFLoxwPXz12JANWeqraAG0RsEok8Q_84PrNWmwdl1hZJDnqa3FvdTigCRP0XwplCuVaaayri36DVZmo_x-gW7vfiiMwL7LDgubAnDa6xONkU_MDMfOsKsUXmvy9GlHbxmFEhUqtHodK917LeSfv/s1267/Resized_RLG08525-01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1267" data-original-width="872" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLrwUyzzsRKBJbr32IaU4uSatD--ffMx6HBWigHeFLoxwPXz12JANWeqraAG0RsEok8Q_84PrNWmwdl1hZJDnqa3FvdTigCRP0XwplCuVaaayri36DVZmo_x-gW7vfiiMwL7LDgubAnDa6xONkU_MDMfOsKsUXmvy9GlHbxmFEhUqtHodK917LeSfv/w275-h400/Resized_RLG08525-01.JPG" width="275" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">After I announced on social media that I was going into the classroom full time, I had lots of people reach out asking why I decided to leave the SLP field. It was no surprise to many since lots of the forums and articles are full of therapists expressing their burnout, stress levels, and car crying sessions. But I didn't completely leave the field. I still see a few clients privately and the principal at school asked me to evaluate potential new students when they come to apply to our school.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">But the main reason I made the change to teaching full time was for my kids. My daughter is about to enter middle school... which scares the daylights out of me. I personally did not enjoy the majority of my middle school experience and if I had a car at that time, would have cried in it almost every day. The school I am teaching at was Kenzie's preschool. I have kept in touch with a lot of the staff and parents and felt that it was a great, small, loving school for her to return to. When I had Kenzie there shadowing and applying, the school offered me a job. Turning down an offer to work with my favorite age group, have health benefits for my family, and tuition benefits would be crazy. As hard as it was to walk away from some students I had been working with for over 10 years, I couldn't say no. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsgAFO-HraRRZ3TTZyw-MkCXhBso6OZ5kBijz0XeWekv38EPbv-j47DrMvLW6pvbLN3SAebzJaa4N5IjVtZ4aFpYf817xooUdAH3yn5nHqtNPxXgsU5kdLHPUHklEbn5gs56XUwukzq8OZ15IrN1gUXHf2DtpSlrsnRTt3mmsYot4HHz6x7R2e5wKp/s4032/IMG_4997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsgAFO-HraRRZ3TTZyw-MkCXhBso6OZ5kBijz0XeWekv38EPbv-j47DrMvLW6pvbLN3SAebzJaa4N5IjVtZ4aFpYf817xooUdAH3yn5nHqtNPxXgsU5kdLHPUHklEbn5gs56XUwukzq8OZ15IrN1gUXHf2DtpSlrsnRTt3mmsYot4HHz6x7R2e5wKp/w300-h400/IMG_4997.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So here we are. About to start my second year teaching with both of my kids at school with me. I am currently seeing a few kids for speech this summer which I am really enjoying. I am really excited share a therapy tool that I have been using with my students (and my own son!) called <b><a href="https://www.bite-r.com">Bite-R</a></b> with you all. Before I start telling you all about my Bite-R experience, I want to introduce you to Susan Haseley. She is a speech-language pathologist and the creator of Bite-R. Susan had two students that were unable to achieve the R sound and ended up being her inspiration to invent this device in 2013. I met Susan at ASHA a few years ago. I was intrigued by her demonstration and the research she presented on her invention. At the time, I didn't have many articulation students on my caseload so I did not end up purchasing a kit. But fast forward to this year where I have a ton of kids with only R on my caseload... I reached back out to Susan about giving Bite-R a try, and here we are today!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.bite-r.com" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="331" data-original-width="495" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-YOAGmGV-OYFDfZTx-2o4jTdN3lvltsiLPpeTV1HVQjmNiJ6PTR9y6aB5QrBnpZpdrtEo1s01sD1RtnJVenMG9L58yibzDVIjBbKuGIn5QwYDqfl9kFNZ0cpf1gDY-8Tll2cPCQxgcKQ/s320/Screen+Shot+2021-09-27+at+9.33.52+AM.png" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p><b><br /></b></p><p><b>What is Bite-R?</b></p><p>The Bite-R is a tactile therapy device that helps bring awareness to the movement, tension, and stability needed to produce the /r/ sound correctly. The device is made with an elastic tension band that helps create sensory motor memory. /R/ has always been one of the hardest sounds to teach because it is produced in the back of the mouth making it more difficult to show our students correct placement. The Bite-R gives the student the tactile cues of correct placement along with our verbal cues for correct production. I am definitely more of a visual learner, so if you are like me and want to see how this works, you can check out Susan's video demonstrations, <a href="https://www.bite-r.com/videos">here. </a></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.bite-r.com" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="497" data-original-width="495" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNksiFYoYWAyN5UzJqc0Luh6RlpBDZg911f4yG_MmQsB79dcymfrggtFb-c8gAXdzDfMnhCFB3tvYwnGVqhCEly_Kx3cuDFvW2JjIXOpsf1Ykxpe9GqpNqGg4o3EFXiHmRsRVcYTGysyU/s320/Screen+Shot+2021-09-27+at+9.33.26+AM.png" width="319" /></a></div><b>What's Included?</b><p></p><p>I personally own the <b>Start Up Kit.</b> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(48, 47, 81); font-size: 16px;">The Kit includes 2 Bite-Rs with Cases, 1 Practice Deck, 1 Manual, 1 Instruction Booklet, Charting Form and Sentence Analysis forms. The Practice Deck provides a list of 30 functional words that contain R in a variety of positions and contexts (vowels, blends, consonantal) and the common misarticulations for each word with instructions for remediation. The Manual includes a chapter specifically on vowels and a chapter that goes in depth with those children who don't make successful productions right away. All kits come with a </span><span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(48, 47, 81); font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">certificate for free live online training with Susan, which I highly recommend. </span></span><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.bite-r.com" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="327" data-original-width="494" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu52tfoXNiO3A3Kh90R5jXASaG6I5Y-Os6U9iIorGZ8WRJ8-wW49Iohh4l-LS1XSlMvBcXkLwozZV0A0HI5982QS8NEfunLmZ2F6kJ0OLLSpYS5mHVBAdOkErmac1mUE1rP-NTV6AQaNw/s320/Screen+Shot+2021-09-27+at+9.34.26+AM.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>So, how did it work?</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I really was pleased with Bite-R and how well the tactile cues from this device works. It's important to make sure the client is comfortable with the device being placed in their mouth. Letting him/her hold Bite-R and really check it out to learn how it works first was helpful. Students don't practice their words with the device in. They use it for a way to feel correct placement for a few seconds, then take it out to practice target words now that they knowl how /r/ should feel. Since this is something I am placing in a child's mouth, I made sure to share this program and the <a href="https://www.bite-r.com/evidence-based-practice">evidence based research</a> with my students' parents before we started. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My personal opinion is that this product would be ideal for private practice therapists working with students one on one. Not that school based therapists wouldn't benefit from this, but you really want to give the student maximum attention for placement using the device. I love the practice deck with cards showing mouth placement for students to imitate. The words are very functional and ideal for making a copy of to send home for practice. I would highly recommend this product to other therapists working with children with speech sound disorders, especially those that only have R left to correct and are really struggling for correct placement. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>This post was sponsored by Bite-R. I hope the start of the school year has been smooth and productive. Even though I am not school based, the school year always brings me schedule changes and motivation for some organizing. I recently received a message from a reader asking for information on how I store my student information. It had been a few years since my last post on this topic, so I thought I would do a little update. When I first left the schools and started private practice, I was constantly driving around to see my students. I kept a binder with each student's class schedule, a copy of their plan of care/goals, data sheets, and a therapy lesson plan form. These items are all separated by pocket dividers for each student. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">At the front of the binder I keep a copy of my schedule and the school(s) schedule so I am aware of days off and special school events. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In my old post I shared that I also kept I large envelope in the binder to stash my expense receipts since I am an independent contractor. The schools and daycares weren't letting outside therapists in so all my students were either over teletherapy or they came to see me in the clinic. Since I was stationary, I decided my student information method could also be stationary. I invested in a pretty rose gold hanging file system with folders. In these folders I also keep a copy of the student's plan of care/goals, testing protocols, data sheets, and lesson plan template. When the student comes to speech, I pull their folder out so I am reminded of their goals and what we did in speech last time. </div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmk30EHr4SojNzbS6fa2dyBF3RpgJ3RE31BtTZVVh5HL8xIPOhgox8p7kwytI29Jw_6TFB8iIgUbqGmiA_P8TmPD7I8bAIVfBt-p1h_Ujj9SyuQGe_yHyYHj4H2Ib_jdDwlfImuC8ynqU/s2048/IMG_8129_jpg.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmk30EHr4SojNzbS6fa2dyBF3RpgJ3RE31BtTZVVh5HL8xIPOhgox8p7kwytI29Jw_6TFB8iIgUbqGmiA_P8TmPD7I8bAIVfBt-p1h_Ujj9SyuQGe_yHyYHj4H2Ib_jdDwlfImuC8ynqU/w400-h400/IMG_8129_jpg.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://amzn.to/39ffeuZ">hanging file organizer</a> / <a href="https://amzn.to/39f85uW">hanging files</a> / <a href="https://amzn.to/3Ai9H2R">file folders</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I use a therapy lesson plan template that I created to remind myself of what we worked on during the last session. Not necessarily back to school shopping, but I will use that excuse with my husband to justify deliveries. I just happened to be browsing Amazon (shocker, right?) and noticed that Learning Resources had a lot of their products on sale. I am a huge fan of Learning Resources educational toys. I have found so many fun ways to use these items in speech so I thought I'd share what I got! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience. It's designed to teach colors and work on fine motor skills. But there are so many things you can do with this set. Pretend/dramatic play, following directions (taking ice cream shop orders), requesting, counting, using "more," spatial concepts (on top!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The next item is a <a href="https://amzn.to/3xT0JXS">Math Cube</a> set. No, I don't teach math and you wouldn't want me tutoring you child in math, but these cubes can be used so many different ways. Imagination/creative play elicits so much expressive language. Let your students play and stack and see what they come up with. I have also had a to of luck using these with smash mats. We stack the cubes on top of the pictures for each production and get a ton of articulation practice that way (tallest tower wins!) These are very easy to wipe down and keep clean as well. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfJVlVeMxy8Up1AYzozsS7nju82TbGmNy9AwMfoVcJXOyz-vgyZMtB4p6OcpPG0dhaxHOdGdBKls5yFXQ3mzViSz9yabzEpPaFDweehRcvoNpyhpzwNkhuoLuxQ7gHU9-CeV5bKo9irPo/s2048/IMG_7965.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfJVlVeMxy8Up1AYzozsS7nju82TbGmNy9AwMfoVcJXOyz-vgyZMtB4p6OcpPG0dhaxHOdGdBKls5yFXQ3mzViSz9yabzEpPaFDweehRcvoNpyhpzwNkhuoLuxQ7gHU9-CeV5bKo9irPo/s320/IMG_7965.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">How adorable are these <a href="https://amzn.to/3iRT6wv">Shape Sorting Cupcakes</a>?! I do have a lot of little ones on my caseload so working on colors and shapes is a bonus with their language skills. This past week we pretended we worked at a bakery and took cupcake orders. We also had to make sure we put the cupcakes in the oven to bake (be careful, it's hot!) and delivered the cupcakes to the customers (boy and girl Little People figures). I also plan on pairing these with the story, <a href="https://amzn.to/3k5zUKS">If You Give a Cat a Cupcake</a> by Laura Numeroff</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have had my eye on the <a href="https://amzn.to/2XEwVSt">Farmer's Market Color Sorting</a> set for a long time now. This set is very engaging for teaching colors and sorting. But the pieces that come with the set are great for creative play. Combine with a cash register (I personally own <a href="https://amzn.to/3AWt5Cv">this one</a>) and you are all set to play supermarket with your students. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoaB-k2ELaR113oNssLi5C2bUKbsdjbwRrt6rfGfLnhSZRDNjd2ITFaQCPGDLafwSBYPCRiZzEbhNYgo0N_KeO5u43nIW_knZJQXv8y5QogZYCJ3u0pe7_pU-YYjBnKgDAmht87vLOZTE/s2048/IMG_7963.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoaB-k2ELaR113oNssLi5C2bUKbsdjbwRrt6rfGfLnhSZRDNjd2ITFaQCPGDLafwSBYPCRiZzEbhNYgo0N_KeO5u43nIW_knZJQXv8y5QogZYCJ3u0pe7_pU-YYjBnKgDAmht87vLOZTE/s320/IMG_7963.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>Last, but not least! This one is not from Learning Resources, but I just had to have it. <a href="https://amzn.to/3iSOQN6">The Big Pop Game Board</a> has been so much fun. It was hard to bring it to work because Kameron was loved using it at home. For him, I was able to sneak in some addition practice with it by him adding up the dice to see how many bubbles he got to pop on his turn. In speech, this has been a hit with my articulation students. They practice a target before the roll the dice and take a turn. The game didn't come with instructions and is incredibly open ended. You and your students can make up your own rules on how to play the game! </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div> <p></p> Kristin Cummings, SLPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07431014684938585456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8402704037412434534.post-42219773360752821202021-08-13T06:00:00.002-04:002021-10-01T09:42:02.517-04:00Back-2-School Jokes<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Q9-hgI5PoqzcsKWutwVKMtqXghQv_yOSt1CuFyaDGk1h93SO6mXgc0kG6c91L4LPcrpm4GrjOHHKXY01Pv6_CwILi0IAoytKK1CuH1Zx8-ZyJv8H4RM3zGUYH6VesHNWyq8F6Mg6GHY/s3016/AdobeStock_275802437.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1042" data-original-width="3016" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Q9-hgI5PoqzcsKWutwVKMtqXghQv_yOSt1CuFyaDGk1h93SO6mXgc0kG6c91L4LPcrpm4GrjOHHKXY01Pv6_CwILi0IAoytKK1CuH1Zx8-ZyJv8H4RM3zGUYH6VesHNWyq8F6Mg6GHY/w640-h222/AdobeStock_275802437.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">It's that time of year again. Right now I have quite a few kids with working memory difficulties. In a research study published in 2016, they found that c</span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: inherit;">hildren with developmental language impairments are often reported to show difficulties with working memory. This has also been evident with auditory processing disorders</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;">. This may be the possible cause of the inability to segregate and group incoming information. If you are unfamiliar with the term 'working memory' think of 'short-term memory.' Both of these terms </span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: inherit;">refer to information you temporarily hold in your memory, so that they are available when you need them. I have seen it frequently referred to as your brain's post-it note! However, working memory specifically is </span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(4, 58, 74); font-family: inherit;">important for putting information that we are learning together with our current knowledge base. It </span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: inherit;">helps with manipulation and </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">transformation of visual and verbal information, such as remembering instructions and problem solving . </span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: inherit;">Working memory continues to develop until the person is around 15 years old. But as we all are individuals and unique, some can hold more information than others. </span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26);"></span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26); font-family: inherit;">Having trouble with working memory can have negative affects on our </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">children. Children with working memory difficulties may have difficulty with concentration, following multistep directions, completing tasks, difficulty self correcting. They are easily distracted, show slow progress even when working hard, miss important details, and have trouble waiting their turn. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOpemk2fabI61CRSQHqmy8JE8IOXC6CAR0ucI2NTOrT_b6oaYqWJCpe20MAamnTLO4ctVcKmO-SApb52VSGIH6uh5cjCMU9oXQKALAxnUeu5B0211TxJd3oRTPRu0wfk8gU6n18a_GKlU/s457/Screen+Shot+2021-07-01+at+10.27.40+AM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="457" data-original-width="452" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOpemk2fabI61CRSQHqmy8JE8IOXC6CAR0ucI2NTOrT_b6oaYqWJCpe20MAamnTLO4ctVcKmO-SApb52VSGIH6uh5cjCMU9oXQKALAxnUeu5B0211TxJd3oRTPRu0wfk8gU6n18a_GKlU/w395-h400/Screen+Shot+2021-07-01+at+10.27.40+AM.png" width="395" /></a></div><span style="font-family: inherit;">But here is the good news! There are lots of exercises and activities you can do to help your child or students with strengthening and improving their working memory skills. Since I have quite a few kids on my caseload that need this, I complied a list of some of my favorite suggestions that I found and that were recommended by super helpful co-workers. </span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>1. Road Trip Game:</b> this is fun for groups. Do you remember playing "I'm going on a road trip and I am going to bring...." game we played as kids? Each person in the group verbally adds an item to bring on the road trip (or to a party, the beach, a picnic, etc) but also has to remember what the others before them wanted to bring... in order! The next person in line repeats what the others before him/her said they would bring and add on his own. For example, Child 1: "I'm going on a road trip and I am going to bring apples." Child 2: "I'm going on a road trip and I am going to bring apples and cookies."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>2. Missing Items!</b> Bring out a tray of items. Give the child a few minutes to look at the items and try to memorize what was on the tray. Have the child close his/her eyes or turn away from the tray. Remove an item (or a few) from the try and see if the child can figure out what is missing by visiting their memory of what they previously saw. You can also simply cover the tray with a towel and see if the child can recall all the items that were on the tray. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>3. Memory </b>(often called Concentration) This simple card game is great for working memory skills. Pick out pairs of cards, mix them up, and place them face down on a table. Have the students take turns flipping over two cards at a time to see if they have a match. Keep the cards in the same place so you can work on remembering where they were. <i>Pro tip: </i>Kill two birds with one stone by using matching articulation cards if your student is also working on that skill!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>4. Card Games!</b> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.6000000238418579px;">If your child likes to play cards, there are tons of great working memory games you can try, like Go Fish or Old Maid. My family is a huge UNO fan. Not only do we have to remember the rules and which cards we are holding while playing, but they also what cards our opponent is holding, too. Cards are also easy to keep in your bag and play with your children while you have some down time. Play card games while at a restaurant waiting on your food or while waiting on big brother to finish soccer practice! </span></span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26);"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26);"><b>5. Simon! </b>Simon is a fun electronic strategy game. </span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(25, 26, 26); letter-spacing: 0.6000000238418579px;">To beat Simon, you have to recall a pattern of colors and repeat it back in the correct order by pressing the colored buttons. The longer you play, the more complicated the patterns become! Bop It! Would also be a great option for listening to verbal directions and executing them quickly. I like to have these games readily available for car trips!</span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(25, 26, 26); letter-spacing: 0.6000000238418579px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(25, 26, 26); letter-spacing: 0.6000000238418579px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>6. Student Teacher!</b> When your child/student is learning a new skill, have them teach it back to you. Have them explain the process, it will help them process the information as they say it out loud. </span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26);"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(26, 26, 26);"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>7. There are so many ways to use toys, games, and regular household items (more than just their original intended use) to teach and elicit lots of language. I chose the</span><span style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://amzn.to/3yGdSoS">Flower Garden Playset</a> </span><span style="text-align: center;">as my second toy of the week. This set has been a fantastic, engaging activity for both in person and teletherapy sessions. Below are some ideas for using this playset and eliciting some great language! If you have more ideas, please share in the comments. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience. There are multiple flowers that are the same color however they are different shapes. You can ask your child if they want a flower that looks the same as yours or if 2 flowers shown are the same or different. Stack some tall and some short. Talk about how they are alike and how they are different. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Spring Theme!</b> This set is perfect for using with a spring theme. Read a spring themed book then pull this set out to play. You can discuss the parts of the flower and what they need to live and grow. Such a great spring vocabulary opportunity. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Requesting</b>. When you're working with little ones, this set allows for lots of opportunities for requesting. Don't just hand them the flowers, have them ask you for the ones they want. Let themes for more, don't just offer more. Take it a step further- the box is see through. Don't just open it, wait for them to ask you to open the box (whether thats tapping on the box or using words/signs to request)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheTqnGjgAF9Z22qBuJEj5rtlQZlyza0wiAf_1ouUDOUWPlrDpuh78uiYA8nRxrK5WkaXkwnyCn80jEwx5NkCJB2Ng6epWMPUB8nQmQUg9dLQ_98-bL4iYUJTAppacYHFHJMKzG_aq5IB4/s2048/IMG_5944.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheTqnGjgAF9Z22qBuJEj5rtlQZlyza0wiAf_1ouUDOUWPlrDpuh78uiYA8nRxrK5WkaXkwnyCn80jEwx5NkCJB2Ng6epWMPUB8nQmQUg9dLQ_98-bL4iYUJTAppacYHFHJMKzG_aq5IB4/s320/IMG_5944.JPG" /></a> <a href="https://amzn.to/3fkajNb" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcmWtDPaYdU7ER0CN9aYxlpeD7Uc4mCIXmTitRe9gG8eckCaV39FwiSoNHC6_Bi2YieuQlaqW6A6ycJ5d9-7OKXc4QKl839_owfcOeGr8_w76kzl2bcSrPpft49Qu0GreDfftP-RobczM/s320/IMG_5936.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Build a garden over Teletherapy.</b> If you are an SLP or teacher using distance learning, these flowers make a fun activity to use digitally. It's such an adorable, animated story about the planets and why our Earth is so special. <p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: start;">You can access this story from </span><strong style="text-align: start;">Vooks</strong><span style="text-align: start;">. Since Christmas time, I have seen ads on Facebook for <a href="https://www.theadventurechallenge.com?aff=518">The Adventure Challenge Books</a>. I was intrigued, but it took a few friends to show off their adventures before I finally bought one for my crew as a Valentine's Day gift. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A few weeks ago we finally had some free time and decided to partake in our first adventure. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.theadventurechallenge.com?aff=518" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJQ4f8WeXy5NX4W6b30UYBQswtOuVL96_5vG8lGGB09ixyQgXFoG6rYv_cQ73n8qgkFKHttqlxY0hkvPhqt2nwPCqoGckBZmiXB3QxFUsZB_wscZMeXu8Cm5tHCKS5tuLKCFu5Zkemdjo/s320/IMG_4243.JPG" /></a> <a href="https://www.theadventurechallenge.com?aff=518" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRKlfhK7zBY74ixDhjidWkr2j7LIYIqjSXI6XYI8uyfWgoCcPHMUyoFqKNHLo2AjKwQQzhEwKi_uqZbtzKmmweGQilVZFm7A4Pysebg1S-73zi1od9F1He4IAmstANyFjAbrIiY6Rpk44/s320/IMG_4256.JPG" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">When you open the book, there is a legend that tells you how much time the activity will take, if you need to make a trip to the store to complete it, if you need to be outside, etc. So you can easily choose an activity that fits your availability for that day. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We decided, based on the requirements, that our first adventure would be an activity called FLOATERS!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3KspoJvuJ7hPAqe9FxB2nfo4kh8Zv7Y5bD1Gl9ymmjNIzgQFHtm2GIBYX-fJk-ehsEJsdufIXcxeq3z5tFpQy4H_W0-QWbdN1CLN8cN4PCRa9vF-_xS8HtcaU6bHDHPWkfPtfDU6qljs/s452/Screen+Shot+2021-03-30+at+11.25.24+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="451" data-original-width="452" height="399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3KspoJvuJ7hPAqe9FxB2nfo4kh8Zv7Y5bD1Gl9ymmjNIzgQFHtm2GIBYX-fJk-ehsEJsdufIXcxeq3z5tFpQy4H_W0-QWbdN1CLN8cN4PCRa9vF-_xS8HtcaU6bHDHPWkfPtfDU6qljs/w400-h399/Screen+Shot+2021-03-30+at+11.25.24+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">After we scratched off the explanation of the activity, we learned that we were going to have to collect fruits and vegetables from the fridge, grab a bucket of water, and have a bobbing challenge! My usual order is a venti iced coffee with classic and cream. I've probably spent half of my income at Starbucks... sometimes visiting my favorite baristas twice a day. My bank account was screaming at me to stop, so I decided that there has to be a way to make these delicious lattes at home. There is! Of course, I still make the occasional coffee stops but I can confidently say, my lattes are better!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://liketk.it/3aaNg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="449" data-original-width="449" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNQWoZkrMX5pqvSweFnu0ISL18NYmpcXyvXkgtXwxLCfHGKozAgZsMRJpwCfFBsav1m63i7964PlRAKLwC8R61g_jSj-YjHIrPRudfHgixzT_t4jZWzt7d1qh__x4paYU_GXS-kk9lJ3g/w400-h400/Screen+Shot+2021-01-22+at+1.38.28+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I make my coffee with a Keurig. Nothing fancy with the one I own, but there are some fancy coffee makers out there. The secret weapon is the milk frother. I add half oat milk and half vanilla almond milk creamer to the frother and whip up a latte. So easy and so good. And way less sugar than my usual order. The frother has both cold and hot settings so you can make iced or hot coffees. </div><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Whatever your coffee order is at the coffee shop, you can make it at home. I chose the <a href="https://amzn.to/3qhyMoG">Learning Resources Counting Surprise Party</a> as my first toy of the week because I have used it so much since COVID hit. This set has been a fantastic, engaging activity for both in person and teletherapy sessions. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience. This means that if you make a purchase using my link, I may make a small commission. </i></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwQs6NJS0HCbkEXOa_CKvhy-xZsMKgi9o4sQ35F9tw4sS8Pc-AnLtx7V6FJ1f263e0b_mwUQO9HC1YHGQq7Zcw6Dxi3ZTSD73TgachyphenhyphenAKrjC6yrBhzfssg3yXzD0mI1Lqu85waWqAlZhA/s452/Screen+Shot+2021-03-03+at+1.06.34+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="452" data-original-width="452" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwQs6NJS0HCbkEXOa_CKvhy-xZsMKgi9o4sQ35F9tw4sS8Pc-AnLtx7V6FJ1f263e0b_mwUQO9HC1YHGQq7Zcw6Dxi3ZTSD73TgachyphenhyphenAKrjC6yrBhzfssg3yXzD0mI1Lqu85waWqAlZhA/w400-h400/Screen+Shot+2021-03-03+at+1.06.34+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">This toy set was created and intended to use to help children learn colors and numbers. But as we all know, every good toy can be used in more than one way. </p><p style="text-align: center;">Here are 5 ways I have used this toy in therapy.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p><b>Number 1: What's Inside?</b></p><p>Work on those inference skills by giving your child clues about what object is inside the box. For example, take a peek inside one of the boxes and say to your little one, <i>"Ohhhhhh!! This one has big ears, loves carrots, and can hop! What do you think it is?" </i>As your child's language grows, switch it up. Tell them that they get to be the teacher and let them give you clues about what is inside. This is a great way to also work on descriptive words and object function. </p><p><br /></p><p><b>Number 2: Following Directions!</b></p><p>These are great objects for working on listening and following directions. Set out the objects and the boxes on a table or the floor. You can use simple directions, such as: <i>"Put the cat in the orange box." </i>work on spatial concepts, such as: <i>"Put the duck behind the blue box"</i> and temporal directions, such as: <i>"Before you put the bear in the green box, put the teapot in the purple box."</i></p><p><i><br /></i></p><p><b>Number 3: Simple Reinforcement</b></p><p>These presents bring a lot of engagement to my sessions. I often use these as simple reinforcements for answering questions or practicing a target speech sound. After the child answers the questions, they get to open one box. During teletherapy, this was often a reinforcement for finishing one activity before we moved on to the next one. </p><p><br /></p><p><b>Number 4: Make Skill and Drill Practice More Fun!</b></p><p>Grab some flashcards and lay them out on the floor or table. These can be for shapes, letters, numbers, vocabulary words, articulation targets.... anything! Place one of the presents on top of each card. Have the child tell you which present he/she wants to open by naming/ practicing what is on the card first. Since there are 10 boxes, you can easily get to 100 trials in a session with this activity. </p><p><br /></p><p><b>Number 5: Movement!</b></p><p>So many of my students need movement breaks between activities. Hide these presents around your therapy space. After each task is complete or after a certain amount of time, instruct your student to go search for one of the presents and bring it back to you. This helps bring excitement and engagement to your sessions as well as work on attention to task. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://amzn.to/3qfMwAl" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="700" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtIUHBUxOHxuCg8PwHj2y9Ks8oxZ_Iwm1TVAm_SockyEYE-6uqcGGPDBKANrADZT7eFgw-3nbpY-asaXVCHNfrYJmHyZwpBFSsyqkrlqVBS0PD0p2l9g3y5AlI8m0rqVT-u91RFHiuC-4/w400-h286/6803_countingsurpriseparty_box-nbr_cnt_sh-1_1200x1200.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;">As I said before, all good toys can be used in more than one way. Occasionally, speech can become a little dull, especially if you have a student that has been with you for a while. Finding new ways to make speech practice fun and exciting can be a little difficult. Magic Words is a fun way to get your kids excited and get a lot of practice in, too!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8b3Vvm3KdbmTDBAib9GCHwrR8MHBXygDFdCDwEzZB7TZuh9Qy2PNTZUO0HXIDtiMJvnlPP6hrMQc7tncKfdCwdS_tncKfxs68jkGPRkMNFfC4Js6nThdeJmotDPZwHBDpI5_2Ou3nOfU/s453/Screen+Shot+2021-02-18+at+2.11.59+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="453" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8b3Vvm3KdbmTDBAib9GCHwrR8MHBXygDFdCDwEzZB7TZuh9Qy2PNTZUO0HXIDtiMJvnlPP6hrMQc7tncKfdCwdS_tncKfxs68jkGPRkMNFfC4Js6nThdeJmotDPZwHBDpI5_2Ou3nOfU/w400-h398/Screen+Shot+2021-02-18+at+2.11.59+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">All you need for this activity is a plain piece of white paper, a white crayon, watercolors, and a paintbrush. I got this Crayola watercolor set with a brush from Target for just over a dollar. Before the kids come in to speech, I write their target words for the day on the paper with white crayon. When they arrive, I tell them the paper is magic paper that makes special words appear when they paint! (or you could say the paint is magic.... whatever works!) </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCMUlMlVqPLt9-kvMuqbYcAO3ncZkBTANYLDsJjBfG3xO2iHESdKjYqrEoxGxuSjHB5BEOD-zGIhXMA5yIE3I-eFZ7WTkJD7yQTVDJ1WAkCqiPVLomAWA_SFSQZUCmnbYUDdxn_gR01bI/s2048/IMG_3923.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCMUlMlVqPLt9-kvMuqbYcAO3ncZkBTANYLDsJjBfG3xO2iHESdKjYqrEoxGxuSjHB5BEOD-zGIhXMA5yIE3I-eFZ7WTkJD7yQTVDJ1WAkCqiPVLomAWA_SFSQZUCmnbYUDdxn_gR01bI/s320/IMG_3923.JPG" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">As the students paint on the paper, the paint won't stick to the crayon, so it makes their words appear like <i>magic</i>! The amount of giggles that come out of this activity is pretty darn amazing. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdeb8U4VeHdl5ArYZPlHSo-XT-C1VKj4x1TA-z-0ph0OwGEytm07PqVTFrXyF3uPtIJXlqmjpI3bWCYP5q5o_HUce3BDz_4h3x-Cx-x9hlLLNoljzbdhmt5RiRNynsO_gv5J6CC_iPeC0/s2048/IMG_3949.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdeb8U4VeHdl5ArYZPlHSo-XT-C1VKj4x1TA-z-0ph0OwGEytm07PqVTFrXyF3uPtIJXlqmjpI3bWCYP5q5o_HUce3BDz_4h3x-Cx-x9hlLLNoljzbdhmt5RiRNynsO_gv5J6CC_iPeC0/s320/IMG_3949.HEIC" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I have used this activity for more than just speech words. In February I always love a good Valentine theme in speech. Lots of holiday vocabulary, kindness, and lots of love. Although most of my students have come back to see me in the clinic, I am still doing a few teletherapy sessions a week. As I have mentioned before, one of my teletherapy students told me a joke at the beginning of our session a few months ago. I loved how it just lightened the mood and started our session out on a happy note. So now, I start all my sessions out with a joke!</p><p style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">Since it's no secret I love a good theme, of course my jokes need to be themed as well. I have been searching the internet for <b>the best, kid approved Valentine jokes.</b> I wanted to compile a list here to share. So here are 18 hilariously sweet Valentine jokes approved to tell in speech, enjoy!!</p><p style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px; I know that more than half of the reasons that my students look forward to coming to speech is to see what game we get to play that day. I mean, I chose to be a pediatric speech therapist as my profession because I wanted to have fun with kids every day (among other reasons of <i>course!)</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience. That means that if you purchase something using my link, I may make a small commission. </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">I am constantly looking for new games to play in speech. But when looking at games, there are certain criteria I require for it to be a game we play in speech. It must be a simple game. Not a lot of rules, not a lot of complicated pieces. And definitely not something that takes a long time to set up. It's a bonus when the game is open ended enough that I could easily make up my own rules for the game. I also need the game to be fast paced. And one that easily allows turn taking.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ua6frbLblgx19H3tvMwpPGeuvtQbhpzkYiwkd7ni7cEH5mFZnfYpL8-yfTq8JvHXfSlo-wEgSXYAjkJsDGnagfSFNgo5TwNS6qj3lyXn1fDC-36mMbEVS9xTlQBcNBY9B5xDeVgacCw/s456/Screen+Shot+2021-01-20+at+12.11.32+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="453" data-original-width="456" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ua6frbLblgx19H3tvMwpPGeuvtQbhpzkYiwkd7ni7cEH5mFZnfYpL8-yfTq8JvHXfSlo-wEgSXYAjkJsDGnagfSFNgo5TwNS6qj3lyXn1fDC-36mMbEVS9xTlQBcNBY9B5xDeVgacCw/w400-h398/Screen+Shot+2021-01-20+at+12.11.32+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I have these criteria in place because I want to get lots of repetitions of speech productions during my short sessions with the kids. Research has shown that successful speech therapy is tied to at least 100 speech productions in a session. Fast paced, turn taking games allows the student to get in lots of practice between turns in the game. <b>We want maximum productions in a minimal amount of time.</b> I complied a list of my go-to speech therapy games and linked them below. </div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">Have one you love to use? In January I always have a winter theme in speech. Lots of winter vocabulary, snowball fights, and lots of fun. Although most of my students have come back to see me in the clinic, I am still doing a few teletherapy sessions a week. As I have mentioned before, one of my teletherapy students told me a joke at the beginning of our session a few months ago. I loved how it just lightened the mood and started our session out on a happy note. So now, I start all my sessions out with a joke!</span></span></span></p><p style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">Since it's no secret I love a good theme, of course my jokes need to be themed as well. I truly enjoy writing this post every year. It forces me to sit down and go through all the photos in my phone. I am reminded of all the small, special moments we experienced during a crazy year. It also makes me incredibly grateful and humbled that over 23 thousand of you are still here and show support to my little creative corner of the internet. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Since we just got our family photos done, I figured it would be the perfect time to write this post. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>A funny (well, funny now!) story about this holiday shoot is shared at the end of this post!</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXMJI_ltS0RIFANEqttGYchPTyrfnj6rjCiWuAaY2B14HritB8p7ufFvX0VpHCnbp64Z06CGDzXreL7NNCtbmEhO6AWKi0J5wkxVXhSnBKA0P8MRtfx33yG8ginnIs9WFi8A0rGD2g6uo/s665/Screen+Shot+2020-12-07+at+3.36.42+PM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="665" data-original-width="484" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXMJI_ltS0RIFANEqttGYchPTyrfnj6rjCiWuAaY2B14HritB8p7ufFvX0VpHCnbp64Z06CGDzXreL7NNCtbmEhO6AWKi0J5wkxVXhSnBKA0P8MRtfx33yG8ginnIs9WFi8A0rGD2g6uo/w466-h640/Screen+Shot+2020-12-07+at+3.36.42+PM.png" width="466" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">This year was definitely a year filled with firsts. So many firsts. First time homeschooling. <i>First time being a teletherapist!</i> First time both of kids rode their bikes without training wheels. Kenzie played her first season of softball. Well, I use 'season' lightly. She played two games and then COVID hit and shut everything down. She learned that she loves dance more than softball and probably has hung up her glove for good. But I'm so proud of her for trying something new. We also got to experience our first year of drive through birthday celebrations. To be completely honest, I hope these stay around! My kids got so excited to decorate our car and drive by friends and teachers' houses to wish them a happy birthday! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjK0cEjQY_diAANSNN9rcSZb00yX8_fPm8G3qJhgZHZUUrD7telCg5zB8SbRMjLxf_igaAm1Q5dl4N6Ee8Zh5JckacUmeGWiC2Hc9disj3nhVzaeqFvIOjaOIJu4H4oK1qhgCtczF4jH8/s2048/RLG06889-01.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1366" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjK0cEjQY_diAANSNN9rcSZb00yX8_fPm8G3qJhgZHZUUrD7telCg5zB8SbRMjLxf_igaAm1Q5dl4N6Ee8Zh5JckacUmeGWiC2Hc9disj3nhVzaeqFvIOjaOIJu4H4oK1qhgCtczF4jH8/s320/RLG06889-01.jpeg" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVYHeO0aBUVy8yi8kmCKcwr4hFPVYxMYnVdtVBqLTHqcFLaKawF-63a0zGlZivz_9KyadWGpX9abokJb4DreHP5ltDHjyK7jDYzlrlxxA8ArcTiFYUT2NyFKS4Y0pA133VTGjvDlJS3Qg/s2048/RLG06957-01.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1366" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVYHeO0aBUVy8yi8kmCKcwr4hFPVYxMYnVdtVBqLTHqcFLaKawF-63a0zGlZivz_9KyadWGpX9abokJb4DreHP5ltDHjyK7jDYzlrlxxA8ArcTiFYUT2NyFKS4Y0pA133VTGjvDlJS3Qg/s320/RLG06957-01.jpeg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;">In June we jumped into the world of milkweed, caterpillars, and butterflies. Kameron started speech and had his first therapy session with Ms. Bethany on July 1! </p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIgQhAmPdnUc92RguM97IAVhelIuP5hfk5aSu3-tl5T9BkjfgdOcCoEDgjWaiUMB6NKI7LYUA682CDBTj5PEtve-s6ev4fvntrynI-lGqQFFCypl8L1Tga5DF9ojv7kbEryqTp0_lUq94/s2048/RLG06421-01.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1677" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIgQhAmPdnUc92RguM97IAVhelIuP5hfk5aSu3-tl5T9BkjfgdOcCoEDgjWaiUMB6NKI7LYUA682CDBTj5PEtve-s6ev4fvntrynI-lGqQFFCypl8L1Tga5DF9ojv7kbEryqTp0_lUq94/w328-h400/RLG06421-01.jpeg" width="328" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">School started back up in August. We decided to send both kids back to school instead of continuing the virtual option. They have both had a fantastic year so far. In September my car was in a crazy freak accident while parked in my office parking lot (I shouldn't be surprised, after all it is 2020!) We joined the Elks Lodge (what we call our neighborhood clubhouse!) Kameron started his first season of T-Ball (no more pre-tee for this big guy!) He was awarded <i>Most Improved Player. </i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">November was a big, emotional month. It brought us a new family member. My sister gave birth to my niece, Willa Blue! We also lost a family member. On November 20th, my grandpa gained his wings and made it to Heaven. He was such a special man. I am so glad that my kids got to know their Great Grandpa so well. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And now here we are in December. This year has been one like no other. I think my biggest take away from the year is to <i>slow down.</i> COVID forced us to slow down and say 'No' to so many things that we think we have to do. I have learned that a slower life is a happier, richer life. My kids don't need to be involved in every activity. It's ok if we miss a practice. It's ok to not check your email at 8pm. It's ok to say no to things that don't bring us joy. In the words of <a href="https://www.livingwithlandyn.com">Living with Landyn</a>, <i>"If it's not a hell yes, it's a no."</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I hope you have a wonderful holiday season. I truly enjoy having every single one of you along with me for this ride. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><b>Merry Christmas.</b></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><b>Happy Holidays.</b></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><b>and cheers to an even Happier New Year!</b></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjZQVePO62d-cBrY6mrLrfAyqnMJE2GrgQwjVfukGaDy3gvX7xqY-M-YUwb2BnY8CF9Ix-YpxIpjOUtixNzCzZJSco4NPL27xAZ5U4utj2TCyHW5RERlrLruoXpwXDnjRpjuIBOE6eR6k/s2048/RLG06326-01.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1426" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjZQVePO62d-cBrY6mrLrfAyqnMJE2GrgQwjVfukGaDy3gvX7xqY-M-YUwb2BnY8CF9Ix-YpxIpjOUtixNzCzZJSco4NPL27xAZ5U4utj2TCyHW5RERlrLruoXpwXDnjRpjuIBOE6eR6k/w279-h400/RLG06326-01.jpeg" width="279" /></a></div></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">As promised, here is the behind the scenes story of this photo shoot!</div><p></p><div dir="auto" style="caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;">Oh this is a shoot I will always remember. Ready for this Instagram vs. reality story? So about 15 mins before these sweet family pictures were taken, I had to wrestle a dead squirrel out of that cute little puppy’s mouth. My bloody hands had to be edited out of these pictures. (By the way, the cute puppy is now named Cujo) And the whole situation caused me to almost pass out! I had to use a cold can of Busch Lite to ice my wounds. It's ok, you can laugh. I laugh about it, too. I have pulled out all my winter holiday stories and we are ready to have as much holly jolly thematic fun as possible. Although most of my students have come back to see me in the clinic, I am still doing a few teletherapy sessions a week. A few weeks ago one of my teletherapy students told me a joke at the beginning of our session. I loved how it just lightened the mood and started our session out on a happy note. So now, I start all my sessions out with a joke!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;">Since it's no secret I love a good theme, of course my jokes need to be themed as well. I have been searching the internet for the best, kid approved seasonal jokes. I wanted to compile a list of Christmas themed jokes here to share. So here are 15 Christmas jokes approved to tell in speech, enjoy!!</p><p style="text-align: center;"> (If you have any, please share. I was wanting to spruce up my winter wardrobe but going to the store to try clothes on is basically impossible these days. I have been a huge fan of having <a href="https://partners.wantable.co/25off ">Wantable</a> delivered to me monthly. I get to try the clothes on and decide which ones to keep and which items to send back. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXVlnpCsU62ksi5uFUQF9YuGDtJ-R2PzAorcWXfejy0DGDaKNdlefY37wG1F_IVRn0Zr9eduLTDzf81SFfd7L6Zd6CpxNpzh7RY3SMw8ldJHMnLf7Tv5E_CetE4qbyfY5qCEVOkVYvMQU/s2048/RLG07832-01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1368" data-original-width="2048" height="429" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXVlnpCsU62ksi5uFUQF9YuGDtJ-R2PzAorcWXfejy0DGDaKNdlefY37wG1F_IVRn0Zr9eduLTDzf81SFfd7L6Zd6CpxNpzh7RY3SMw8ldJHMnLf7Tv5E_CetE4qbyfY5qCEVOkVYvMQU/w640-h429/RLG07832-01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><span style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>I have teamed up with <a href="https://partners.wantable.co/25off ">Wantable</a> to share some of their cozy items from their limited time, Home for the Holidays Edit! I have pulled out all my turkey stories and we are ready to gobble up as much thematic fun as possible. Although most of my students have come back to see me in the clinic, I am still doing a few teletherapy sessions a week. A few weeks ago one of my teletherapy students told me a joke at the beginning of our session. I loved how it just lightened the mood and started our session out on a happy note. So now, I start all my sessions out with a joke!<p></p><p><br /></p><p>Since it's no secret I love a good theme, of course my jokes need to be themed as well. I have been searching the internet for the best, kid approved seasonal jokes. I wanted to compile a list of Thanksgiving themed jokes here to share. So here ya go, enjoy!!</p><p> (If you have any, please share. The cornier the better!)</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY_BEdqLXNFzdbKdDxx6O9Hi9KkBmVijFOovYQc1YeeXAr12BdvpptFAaQfpfQQ6ske-dfIgVz2KLlTtHy7I3w3yu4EAQ8DSbL7tNu-Ba7YDDFu42W_58fs8hccOzppq9Un1kVUt96K-0/s454/Screen+Shot+2020-11-05+at+3.21.59+PM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="403" data-original-width="454" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY_BEdqLXNFzdbKdDxx6O9Hi9KkBmVijFOovYQc1YeeXAr12BdvpptFAaQfpfQQ6ske-dfIgVz2KLlTtHy7I3w3yu4EAQ8DSbL7tNu-Ba7YDDFu42W_58fs8hccOzppq9Un1kVUt96K-0/w400-h355/Screen+Shot+2020-11-05+at+3.21.59+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;">Q: What do you call a running turkey?<o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><i>A: Fast food!</i><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;">Q: What did the turkey say to the computer?</span><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><i>A: Google, google, google!</i></span><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;">Q: Why couldn’t the Thanksgiving band perform?</span><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><i>A: Somebody had eaten the drumsticks.</i></span><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;">Q: What’s a Turkey’s Favorite Dessert?</span><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><i>A: Apple Gobbler!</i></span><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;">Q: If April showers bring May </span><span face="Century Gothic, sans-serif"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.3333333432674408px;">flowers, what do May flowers bring?</span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face="Century Gothic, sans-serif"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.3333333432674408px;"><i>A: Pilgrims! </i></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif"><i> </i></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0in; text-align: start;"><span face=""Century Gothic", sans-serif" style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: 0.25pt;">Q. This time of year is so much fun because we get to jump right into some of the most fun holiday therapy themes. There are so many options for spooky stories and ghoulish games, but sometimes those are a little too scary for our little ones. So I always love incorporating a (friendly) monster theme into my sessions this time of year. I wanted to do a round up post of all my favorite monster themed activities so you can join in on our fun!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience. You can always change that tag line to something that incorporates a specific target word or speech sound. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinyt7C-wjbU9HMFHNgrwzHzRma0UjYu5pfghaUMeOEJ_iLXxDQ3jTtiODNr9-D8Vx3L8QHsa-J4LGEZjitRcqjSHxqZOsBaVclHulcKYcVJsmqkOnuKW9sRLb4JfvYTaOm8Dq_wcB49lg/s2048/IMG_1591.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinyt7C-wjbU9HMFHNgrwzHzRma0UjYu5pfghaUMeOEJ_iLXxDQ3jTtiODNr9-D8Vx3L8QHsa-J4LGEZjitRcqjSHxqZOsBaVclHulcKYcVJsmqkOnuKW9sRLb4JfvYTaOm8Dq_wcB49lg/w400-h400/IMG_1591.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Another really fun monster game is this <a href="https://mindsthatplay.com">Half Match Monster Edition</a> game by Minds That Play! This is a super cute way to work on social skills, attributes, and asking questions. The game suggests two different ways to play (one is like Go Fish and the other is like Guess Who) but you could definitely use this open ended or even as a reinforcement after tasks are completed (how many monsters can you create before the session is up!?) To learn more about the game, check out their website, <a href="https://mindsthatplay.com">here!</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjizlRTVJz_8YgpqgG-BtVQWyhDljZt2j9lBDZ-xvg27QPB_iargDdB_tsUPMlEYbNgaoChliW48wVULbYHmZoB7jaqKbBNtkr0U0x2N1ImxSZLiVYA_CFiSfIQyChqD0uVIgQqFvbeW98/s2048/IMG_1497.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjizlRTVJz_8YgpqgG-BtVQWyhDljZt2j9lBDZ-xvg27QPB_iargDdB_tsUPMlEYbNgaoChliW48wVULbYHmZoB7jaqKbBNtkr0U0x2N1ImxSZLiVYA_CFiSfIQyChqD0uVIgQqFvbeW98/w400-h400/IMG_1497.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A fellow SLP shared this adorable <a href="https://amzn.to/3l235O8">monster snack holder </a>on Instagram the other day. I immediately ran to amazon to purchase one because I knew it would be perfect for my monster theme! There are literally unlimited things to do with this adorable little guy. We have been feeding him spiders (<a href="https://amzn.to/2G40yEh">spider rings</a>) as a fun reinforcement activity. Someone mentioned that this would be great for feeding therapy and I absolutely agree! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">On the iPad: Toca Kitchen Monsters!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have had this app on my iPad for quite a while. My students love it and it has some great language opportunities. You first choose the monster you want to cook for, then you choose the food, how you want to prepare it, and finally feed the monster. Sometimes they love the food, sometimes they don't (which is always pretty funny to see their reactions!) You can download this app in the app store for iPhone and iPad for FREE, <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/toca-kitchen-monsters/id510301841">here!</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And what would a good theme be without some good ole ART-ticulation color pages?! I wanted to do a quick round up post of my most used (and top requested!) activities in September. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience. This means that if you purchase something using my link, I may make a small commission (thank you!)</i></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigKRXQM5kYHjKya4bjPNe0M1zodXGzzvvaGAMdGcBqnQmWh2CkT_cBBbflYOXToELorgHAMy0-JJ5vprCy_H8i_pm2hCMgx1p-LPBnMSnlajndlNCbxhLYZ_vWHGHx3qTWOOtIJJmuZ4U/s502/Screen+Shot+2020-09-30+at+1.13.46+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="455" data-original-width="502" height="363" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigKRXQM5kYHjKya4bjPNe0M1zodXGzzvvaGAMdGcBqnQmWh2CkT_cBBbflYOXToELorgHAMy0-JJ5vprCy_H8i_pm2hCMgx1p-LPBnMSnlajndlNCbxhLYZ_vWHGHx3qTWOOtIJJmuZ4U/w400-h363/Screen+Shot+2020-09-30+at+1.13.46+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;">First up, the <a href="https://amzn.to/36EVGjI">My First Crayola Touch-Lights!</a> This thing is the coolest little doodle board. Since sensory bins seem to be a thing of the past these days, I figured this would be a fun option. The board plays music and the lights change colors. It's been a fun way to work on sensory skills, requesting, shapes, letters, and even sight words!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPEunBkw3W0PY6TF41yi0rvCSV3JofQ8HetWit8hyphenhyphenXUkhgEB9MXWfUyqDLnwrgaw-HaYV-fu6K75xBEyxRssW1om45iXTBtf1JogycKgE2TYZk-UKPJP6fi3tbIM6QnXI6_RlAVJaaIQ4/s2048/IMG_0599.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPEunBkw3W0PY6TF41yi0rvCSV3JofQ8HetWit8hyphenhyphenXUkhgEB9MXWfUyqDLnwrgaw-HaYV-fu6K75xBEyxRssW1om45iXTBtf1JogycKgE2TYZk-UKPJP6fi3tbIM6QnXI6_RlAVJaaIQ4/s320/IMG_0599.JPG" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Next, the <a href="https://amzn.to/3jx8e06">Learning Resources Mini Muffin set.</a> This may actually be the #1 requested activity. I love it because the kids work on sorting, color naming, number recognition, counting, and fine motor all in one activity. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirAWwzF8hgYvXhvqpkKannoXIZDz956RgTB0WdI6SrAXzzX9IV26x-uwpq6p2LMip2E9RdbWQ87dhb18orIJzf6kd5jxaNDIODV2dMd5Gq-x4b6P_i2pA9me_QhLXZasneKW_VEqw5ulQ/s2048/IMG_1135.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirAWwzF8hgYvXhvqpkKannoXIZDz956RgTB0WdI6SrAXzzX9IV26x-uwpq6p2LMip2E9RdbWQ87dhb18orIJzf6kd5jxaNDIODV2dMd5Gq-x4b6P_i2pA9me_QhLXZasneKW_VEqw5ulQ/s320/IMG_1135.JPG" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Beep, Beep! Here comes the <a href="https://amzn.to/3jx8e06">Garbage Truck </a>and <a href="https://amzn.to/34ufoMl">mini garbage cans!</a> I originally purchased this because I was warned one of my new students was absolutely obsessed with garbage trucks. I had to win his heart over, so I ran to amazon and snagged this truck! Turns out almost all of my students love playing with this truck. I have incorporated the truck into the therapy activities and also used it as a reinforcement toy at the end of a session. </div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVO9AMdEa5aV1j7VwfpKC_mSLW0lJETsHKXP97fsIok5jf1OVxXqMqW2uOAP4yF5hqzNDxB_6-cT-Qk_ZdAy3QeajrBoFnB5S8YkO3V8skkmM0yzDeNibAlH8eM2v2OVl-UNgAS_YlTEs/s2048/IMG_1144.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVO9AMdEa5aV1j7VwfpKC_mSLW0lJETsHKXP97fsIok5jf1OVxXqMqW2uOAP4yF5hqzNDxB_6-cT-Qk_ZdAy3QeajrBoFnB5S8YkO3V8skkmM0yzDeNibAlH8eM2v2OVl-UNgAS_YlTEs/s320/IMG_1144.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Last, but certainly not least, the <a href="http://liketk.it/2WCH5">Critter Clinic! </a> This is a favorite of mine as well. The kids get so excited to use the matching color keys to open the doors and see what is hiding inside. The kit comes with a stuffed cat and dog, but I will often take those out and put in specific objects to target goals. It also comes with a doctor kit so the child can give the animals a checkup- fabulous for pretend play and lots of language!</div><div><br /></div><p><br /></p></div> Kristin Cummings, SLPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07431014684938585456noreply@blogger.com
