My 10 Favorite Books for Pirate Week!

Wednesday, September 16, 2015
In honor of Talk Like a Pirate day on September 19th, this week has been deemed, Pirate Week! Actually, I like to stretch pirate week out to 2-3 weeks because there are just so many fun pirate activities, but this is the week you will see pirates invading classrooms, blogposts, and therapy sessions.  I wanted to share a few of my favorite pirate themed books that I use in therapy while celebrating those silly scalawags! Below I compiled a list of my 10 favorite books to use during Pirate Week!
This post contains Amazon Affiliate links for your convenience.

8. Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by Danna Smith
9. Pirate Boy by Eve Bunting
and of course we can't leave out,
10. The Pirate Who Couldn't Say Arrr! by Angie Neal

I would LOVE to hear what your favorite books are! Please leave a comment sharing your top pirate books :)

Friday Rewind {Highlights From This Week!}

TGIF! We made it through another week. I may or may not be writing this post with a glass of wine in my hand.... Did you all celebrate Pirate Week? I had such a fun time celebrating with "me hearties" that I think I am going to have to continue to use a pirate theme next week too. Plus, I found SO many cute pirate activities that one week is just not long enough. Want to see what we were up to?
Here is a peek into my week...
PS- you wont find any pictures of me getting crafty this week! Although I am hosting a Pinterest party at my house tonight so maybe I'll have some up next week :)
This week we read one of my favorite pirate books, How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long & David Shannon
After we read the story, we had some fun!
We made our own pirates!
We practiced some Pirate Pronouns!
We answered comprehension questions from Jenn Alcorn's How I Became a Pirate companion!

I love pirate week... and clearly the kids do too. If you need some "piratey"ideas for your speech room, you can check out my Pirate Week Pinterest board here.
This was my week! I'd love to hear how your week went.

Ahoy Speechies! A Pirate Themed Articulation Unit

Monday, September 16, 2013
Yo ho, ho! Pirate Week is so much fun! I felt like my articulation kiddos weren't having as much piratey (is that a word?) fun as my language kiddos were, so I created an articulation unit, too!
I introduce to you...
Here's what's inside:
Pages 3-61: Articulation Cards
/r, s, l, k, g, f, v/, SH, CH, TH sounds in the initial, medial, and final positions.
This comes to a grand total of 348 artic cards. Print the sounds you need and use them in the game that is also included!
Pssst... I included a little present with these cards. Each card has a label indicating which target the word addresses (initial /r/, final CH, etc) Dropped your cards and now they are out of order? No problem! You can thank my OCD for this one :)

Page 62: Bonus Game Cards

Page 63: Game Board
My thought this game was to have the kids take a card, practice the word on the card, then move across the game board. However, this is an opened game board, so use it however you would like!

Page 64-65: Homework sheets
Word and sentence level coloring sheets

I hope you love this unit as much as I do! You can download a copy of this activity in my TpT store here or enter below for a chance to win one of three copies! If you cannot wait for the giveaway to end and want to have this activity to use now... go ahead and purchase the packet. If you win, you can choose any product from my store for free!

Arghh Pirates! A Thematic Unit

Sunday, September 15, 2013
Did you know Thursday September 19 is National Talk Like a Pirate Day? I had so much fun last year during pirate week that I have to celebrate with my speechies again this year.
Need some Pirate themed activities? No worries, I've got you covered. Since I have a high number of PreK kids on my caseload, I created a thematic unit packet to address Prek-K goals. Check it out... and make sure you enter to win a copy at the bottom of the post.
 Pages 3-4: Vocabulary Cards
Use these cards to introduce new pirate themed words to your students. You could also print two copies and play a memory game with them, hide them around the room, etc.

Pages 4-9: What Does Not Belong?
Have your students help the pirate decide which item does not belong with the others and why.

Pages 10-13: Pirate Categories
Sort the pictures into the correct category.

Pages 14-16: Pirate Pronouns

This activity includes picture cards that can be used for expressive or receptive pronouns. For example, put 2-3 cards out and prompt the student with a direction: “Show me, she is on the island.” or have the student describe the picture using the correct pronoun.

Pages 17-20: Phonological Awareness with Polly Parrot
Students decide what to feed Polly based on the initial sound.

“Ahoy! My name is Polly and I am looking for some lunch. Will you help me find something that starts with the /r/ sound to munch?”

Pages 21-22: Writing Prompt (boy & girl)

“If I was a pirate....”

Enter below to win a copy! If you cannot wait for the giveaway to end and want to have this activity to use now... go ahead and purchase the packet. If you win, you can choose any product from my store for free!

Book of the Week!!

Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Last week in speech was so much fun! In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, I decided to dedicate my whole week to pirates! Some of the other classes I work with joined into the fun as well! Take a peek into my speech room and check out what we have been up to....
All of my activities were centered around the book, How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long. I used this book with all grade levels as well as with both my speech and language groups. I adjusted the activities based on age and goals.

All of my students made their own paper plate pirate!

Each student decided if they wanted to be a pirate or not based on what they learned about pirates in the book. They put a sticker in the yes or no column and shared why they chose that answer.
These were some of my answers:
I want to be a pirate because.....
they don't have to eat vegetables!
they find treasure!
I want a pet parrot.

I don't want to be a pirate because....
they have green teeth.
they are mean!
they don't have manners.
they are smelly because they don't take a bath!

My articulation groups listed /r/ words for the Pirates Say Arrrgh! activity.

You can download my entire pirate unit here (some fun pirate songs I found are also included!)
