There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Frog! {Giveaway}

Spring is in the air! Time to break out all of those fun and colorful books about flowers blooming, birds chipping, and old ladies swallowing frogs! Yep, you heard right. Our beloved Lucille Colandro has done it again and created another Old Lady book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Frog

 So naturally I had to order it and create a speech and language story companion to go along with it. Check it out and enter to win a copy at the end of this post!

This packet was created with my students in mind so of course it is loaded with speech and language activities. This packet targets vocabulary, story sequencing, following directions, articulation, story retelling, and compare/contrasting. In addition, there are a few open ended activities included that you can use to target any goal you are working on.

The picture above is of the Old Lady mat with story picture cards. Your students can take turns "feeding" the old lady as she swallows the items in the story. 

Story sequencing is something that many of my students struggle with. I created this cut, glue, color activity to work on this skill as well as story retelling. Numbers and words are included so students can work on this activity independently. I made this one in black and white to both save on some ink as well as let my students get creative!

I love these open ended dots pages because I can address just about any goal with them while still keeping the Old Lady theme going. Have your students practice a target goal (articulation, answer a question, produce a grammatically correct sentence, use good social skills, etc) before he/she covers a dot. I like to use bingo markers, chips, small erasers, or candy if I am in a really good mood :)

Thursday Rewind {With a Giveaway!}

Happy Thursday!! So I normally try to post on Fridays about the activities we did in speech that week, but this week I cut my week a little short. As you read this, I am on the way to Savannah, GA to celebrate my good friend Francesca's bachelorette party! (If you care to follow our trip, follow me on Instagram @kevstin) This week we continued to spread the love and celebrate Valentine's Day. This week we read the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose!

My students never seem to get tired of these books! In addition to reading this story, we had some fun with a few festive activities.

First, we used this activity from my speech & language set to practice story retelling and sequencing skills with the Old Lady!

Then, we went on a story scavenger hunt to find our target speech words in the story! After we finished, I sent these handy little worksheets home for homework (score!)

My younger kiddos and I created a Valentine's Day speech wreath.... although almost every single kid put it on their head as a hat when we finished. V-Day visor? Sure!

This craft was inspired by the wonderful Jenna Rayburn!

Last but  certainly not least, we wrapped up our week with the Valentine Heart Challenge! Each child placed a heart on the mat when they practiced a target. This made for a fun skill and drill session! Instead of candy I found these adorable heart erasers at the Target Dollar Spot that worked like a charm. She's Baaaaaack! {Old Lady Activity Pack Giveaway!}

Only 13 days till Christmas!! Have your therapy sessions been FILLED with as many festive activities as possible? Mine have. I love this time of year and I want to fit in as many holiday themed activities as possible before the new year (not that my kids mind playing Christmas games in July!) 

This week we read the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell!

Since the kids always like love reading these Old Lady books, I figured I would try to hit as many of their goals as possible while reading the story. So... I created a collection of speech & language extension activities!

Here is what's included in the packet:

 Large story sequencing Activity

Print, cut, and laminate. Have your students “feed” the lady the items as you read the story. These can also be used as vocabulary cards.

Student Story Sequence Activity

Let your students demonstrate their story sequencing skills as they put the story in order. Pictures are black and white so they can color in the pictures when they are done.

  Cover The Dots!

Have your students cover the dots with chips, markers or even better- candy! as they correctly practice a target word or answer a question!

 Color the Story

Have your students work on vocabulary as they color in the pictures as they read about them in the story. 

Articulation Coloring Sheet

Have some fun while you do a little "skill and drill" therapy. As your students practice each articulation target, have them color in 1 picture. If they complete the whole sheet, they practiced 60 targets!

Story Scavenger Hunt

Who doesn't love a good scavenger hunt? Have your students search the story for words that contain their target sound!

Mini Book

Students can illustrate a mini version of the story. Great for story retell, articulation practice, and homework!

 Prepositions

Have your students practice prepositions/ spatial skills with vocabulary from the story.

 Pronouns

Have your students practice pronouns with vocabulary from the story. Tell your student who to give the item to. For example, “Give the bows to her.” He/she should give the bows to the picture of the lady.

 Following Directions!

Read the instructions provided for your students to follow or make up your own!

Friday Rewind: Highlights From Therapy This Week!

So it's Friday, we made it.  Most of you are wrapping up your first week of school! How was it? I have to be honest, I missed the excitement and crazyness that comes with the first week of school. But most of my students started back at school this week too, so I embraced the Back to School theme in therapy this week!

This week we read the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books!

 by Lucille Colandro. I just love these Old Lady books (and so do the kids!) There are so many fun activities to go along with this book. Most of the activities I used came from Jenn Alcorn's activity companion. You can check it out here. 

The kids had a blast feeding the old lady school supplies this week and creating a story sequencing book. In addition, I used part of The Dabbling Speechie's Pronoun Fun activity with the vocabulary card's from Jenn's companion! I love when I can combine activities!!

My articulation kiddos had fun throwing bean bags at target words this week, too. To play, they would use the sentence, "I want to hit the _____" as they threw a bean bag at a target. Then they would use the sentence, "I hit the ____" after they threw them. Who doesn't love bean bags? This was also a good activity to get them out of their chairs and moving a bit.
